The twin display cabinets

Firstly, I never gave up woodworking - just took a 2+ year break from posting, with very few projects done in the meantime! This project was done sometime in late 2017 - early 2018. I had some scrap 12mm plywood & laminates lying around. Some award trophies & certificates were gathering dust in a box at the same time.  Decided to put the scraps to good use and build 2 differently sized display cabinets which shall have contrast coloring & wall mountable, with the front open. Built the carcass using pocket hole joinery and glue. The back is 6 mm ply which is glued and nailed to the carcass. Cut leftover brown and white laminates to size, and put them in. It was a bit tricky to do the inner walls, especially the back where there's no option to trim once the laminate is stuck. Put in solid wood trims on the front and stained + varnished them. Used 2 shelf hooks on the smaller one , and 3 on the bigger one. Measured, drilled...

Making a broken hydraulic and revolving chair reusable....

Image
... well - by dropping the hydraulic and revolving features ! I had a couple of chairs in my study room with hydraulic lifts (not that I needed this feature - the chairs were always set at their highest) and 5 revolving casters at the base. Both of them had their hydraulic struts at the end of their life, which means they frequently sank without notice ! Couple of weeks back in a lazy afternoon weekend, I got a little too comfortable on one of them when one of the legs gave away, and I crashed to the floor, face up, and in the process hurt my right shoulder (enough to keep me out of tennis for couple of weeks). The broken base : The chair was now unusable and dangerous , so I planned on decommissioning it and getting a new one (now I DID NOT need a new one with hydraulic lift and revolving features). But at second thoughts, other than the broken leg, and the unusable gas strut, everything else was fine with the chair. So I took it up ...

Scraping up the scraps barrel

Few small projects using scraps Just thought of putting up all my small projects till date on a single page.  These projects made effective use of scraps lying around in my shop.  Almost all of them do not have detailed step by step photos - just the end results. 1. Coaster Had some 12 mm ply, beading and broken laminates. An hour later this coaster came out. Beading stained with walnut color stain from Asian Paints. 2. Medicine Box Started as a bare-bones plywood box using 12 and 19 mm ply, then found some unused odd sized laminates left on the floor, so used them too.  Then my wife suggested that we use this as a Homeopathy medicine box. So found some 6 mm ply and used a spade bit on my drill press to put 16mm holes in the same. Finally propped the 6 mm piece on 2 sides by using 2 smaller 6 mm pieces. 3. Storage space door We have quite a few open storage spaces in our dining room. One of them has som...
