Scraping up the scraps barrel
Few small projects using scraps
Just thought of putting up all my small projects till date on a single page.
These projects made effective use of scraps lying around in my shop.
Almost all of them do not have detailed step by step photos - just the end results.
1. Coaster
Had some 12 mm ply, beading and broken laminates. An hour later this coaster came out. Beading stained with walnut color stain from Asian Paints.
2. Medicine Box
Started as a bare-bones plywood box using 12 and 19 mm ply, then found some unused odd sized laminates left on the floor, so used them too.
Then my wife suggested that we use this as a Homeopathy medicine box. So found some 6 mm ply and used a spade bit on my drill press to put 16mm holes in the same. Finally propped the 6 mm piece on 2 sides by using 2 smaller 6 mm pieces.
3. Storage space door
We have quite a few open storage spaces in our dining room. One of them has some old newspapers stacked in it, but one of our cats is quite fond of tearing up newsprint in little pieces.
So had to devise a frame out of some sal wood lying around, and used a 6 mm ply as the door.
The frame is held in place by screws drilled in the wall, while the frame sits on 2 hinges and has 2 magnets to hold it in place while closed.
Put in a quickie rack inside for storing ease.
Rack and door laminated for ease of maintenance.
4. Subwoofer stand and magazine stash
A small side stand I made a few months back for placing the subwoofer by the side of the TV.
Carcass made out of 1/2 inch sal wood, with half lap joints.
Top and bottom rack from 6 mm ply.
Sides and back using Masonite.
Only the top and front is finished using laminates.
Very lightweight, and the lower rack can be used to stack a few magazines etc.
Dear Sid...Great job done....can you explain how you manage to cut laminates with a smooth finishing. Whenever I cut with sunmica cutter it is uneven and not smooth...please help..
ReplyDeleteManoj - I use a heavy piece of straight edge plywood and a cheap breakaway style knife to score the laminate multiple times. Then I stand on the plywood and pull the laminate towards me till it snaps on the scored edge. The trick is to always cut laminate half inch wider than the surface it is to be applied on, glue the laminate with slight overhang on all sides, and then finish with a laminate trimmer router or a bastard file to get a smooth straight edge.
DeleteThanks I dont have Router wwill try with Bastard file...
